During
the day, Mike Tucker pulls electrical cable and at
night/weekends he is an accomplished horseman. Tucker lives
on a tidy private training and boarding stable and is one of
Niagara’s most prominent horse trainers and show ring
judges. He has been involved with horses for the past 20
years, he presently owns Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds.
Using a gentle but firm approach towards horse handling,
he demonstrates daily that Wild West bronco-busting
methods are dangerous, unnecessary and usually
counter-productive. “You have to build a good foundation
of trust between rider and horse”, Tucker said.
Tucker uses his four watchwords - patience, persistence,
kindness and firmness, to train both horses and their
owners, whether it be for the trails or the show ring.
“You have to remember that a horse has a mind of its
own. By nature it is a creature of flight and it must
never resent what you are doing with it. The biggest
challenge is keeping its mind fresh”, Tucker says.
Tucker,
was encouraged to venture into judging by his friend and
prominent horseman/judge Peter Cameron of St. Catherines.
Tucker became a junior judge in 1981 and a senior judge
in western and stock seat equitation with the Canadian
Equestrian Federation in 1985
Tucker has judged some of the finest horseshows in the
United States and Canada. Here are a few of the shows he
has judged: Canadian National (Toronto, Canada); Cape
Breton Exhibition- 6 days/all events (Cape Breton, Nova
Scotia); Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada Breeders
Futurity; Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada (Nova Scotia);
Central Canada Exhibition (Ottawa, Canada) and various
Open Horseshows.
